Community (n): a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.

COMET is helping to change communities into true collaborations. For a community collaborative to succeed in their mission, they must be able to share knowledge and learn from each other. And this requires the ability to share their findings/data in a way that is safe and easy. Doesn't sound possible, does it? Until recently, it wasn't. COMET's Data Reporter Platform can accept data across silos, across database software systems to tell the whole story of your community. Current features include graphic visualization, identified and/or de-identified (based on consent), flexibility to create and aggregate groups, export filtered data, and leverage geocoded address data to understand regional trends and more.​​​​​​​

Reporting Capabilities: By default, all records are associated with a reporting group. A single record can be associated to multiple reporting groups.

• Personally Identifiable Information (PII) Data: With proper consent, organizations will be able to access the records within a reporting group in an identifiable way. You will still be able to run aggregated reports. However, you can "toggle" the underlying data to see who the data relates to, rather than just seeing the value of the data. Additionally, a single-subject report is also available, which outlines all of the milestones of a given student/person over a period of time. Different data elements can be toggled on or off, depending on what information is desired.
• Aggregated, De-Identified Data: In some cases, identifiable data isn't required or approved for specific users with access to the data. For these cases, the Community Data Reporter also allows for an aggregated, de-identified view of the data. Rather than seeing the names of who the records associate to, names and PII data will be redacted
• Geocoding: COMET will convert the addresses of the records in the database to X and Y coordinates that can then be displayed on a map.
• Exporting Capabilities: Data can be exported in Excel, PNG, or PDF format, and users can select to export a specific report, or export an entire dashboard.

The past few months have been busy for COMET with lots of new faces, new places and new projects. One of the highlights was our presentation to the Adirondack Foundation's Birth to Three (BT3) Alliance at their annual meeting back in May. We gave an overview of our project with Chemung County and Comprehensive Interdisciplinary Developmental Services (CIDS) as they work to create a database of the children in their county beginning as soon as they’re born with a newborn registration completed at the local hospital.

This county project focuses on the ages of 0 to 5 beginning with birth and following families from prenatal to home visitation programs and up to school readiness and those related assessments. From a partnership beginning with the County and CIDS that extends across multiple service providers, the question of data sharing was important. There was also the important consideration of parent consent.

COMET has been able to support this project because of our philosophy for data sharing and how we track services delivered, either as a group or one to one. We presented on various options communities and counties have for sharing data across providers, either integrated into one database or distributed across multiple client and brought together through an interface, see our graphic below.

One of the most exciting developments to come from COMET is happening - The COMET Parent Portal! We have a beta version in production and one special customer, GROW Rochester, who is in a pilot rollout phase. We also have secured funding to develop phase 2 of the portal with some exciting additional features - the ability for parents to complete assessments through the portal, a messaging system, the ability to view attendance records, and much more!

The COMET Team is really excited about this project. It's been in design over the last couple years, and now with the pilot we can begin to demonstrate that connecting with parents can make all the difference in the effectiveness of programs. We hope this parent portal will serve as one way for our customers to bridge the gap between home and school, or between home and afterschool. All the research and best practices agree, connecting with parents is critical and truly makes a difference.

We hope you're excited as we are. The parent portal isn't just a new population for us to connect with, we're focused on using new design and technology as well as mobile development, with lots more new things to come. For now, all we can say is that we're diligently working on it, but as timelines for a general rollout are developed we'll be sure to let all our customers know. COMET is now implementing The Protective Factors Survey (PFS). This is a 20-item measure in the public domain designed for use with caregivers receiving services such as home visiting, parent education, and family support. It is a pre-post survey completed by the program participants, usually parents or caregivers.

The PFS measures protective factors in five areas:

1. Family functioning/resiliency
2. Social support
3. Concrete support
4. Nurturing and attachment
5. Knowledge of parenting/child development

The survey results are designed to provide agencies with the following information:

• A snapshot of the families they serve
• Changes in protective factors
• Areas where workers can focus on increasing individual family protective factors
